I remember having several conversations with a friend about life lessons. He felt very strongly that lessons were not what life was about. And I heard him, although I don’t think he thought I did.
I pondered our conversations a lot, finally coming to the conclusion that it wasn’t so much the concept of learning from our experiences he disagreed with but more his understanding of what a lesson was. I believe he saw some of his experiences in the light of lessons at school where we were to be ‘taught a lesson’ and there would be punishments for not ‘learning it’, (like failing a test, detention etc.). If we were to see life lessons in this light we would feel like many of our painful experiences were punishments and wonder what we had done to deserve them.
If we see life lessons from the perspective of our soul’s growth, and that there are no good or bad experiences, we will be less likely to feel we are being punished.
Life is about learning, it is about growing, it is about experiencing. On the soul journey, there is no good or bad, right or wrong, there just is. No experience, ‘no lesson’ is wasted.
When we hear this and believe that our soul wants us to learn lessons, we may think that our lessons once learnt will mean we can live these grand, abundant lives that are free from pain and suffering. However, our soul really comes here to experience all shades of life. We cannot escape this life without pain and suffering. But, just the same, we cannot escape this life without knowing laughter and love. Our lives here on Earth are veiled in dualities. One, such as darkness or sadness, allowing us understanding of the other, such as light or joy, on our journey through life and ‘life’s lessons.
